AWAtelier has completed more than 75 residential projects over the past 7 years. The scope of these projects is spread over a wide spectrum of designs and budgets, starting from a 43sqm “bush” cabin to high-end homes of 600sqm plus in size.

AWAtelier assigns great value to build good relationships between the designer and the client, especially with a residential project, as they are very personal in nature.

One of the more challenging, nonetheless rewarding, fields in architecture is the additions and alterations to existing design. Having an existing structure to react to and shape mostly generates exciting new possibilities.

AWAtelier welcomes the design challenge, no matter how small. There’s experience to be gained in even the most creatively mundane projects.

At AWAtelier we wholeheartedly support the “green-revolution”.  By understanding the physical site dynamics and good design principles, we strive to create a lasting relationship between the structures and its surrounding. The connection between the inside and outside has always been a prominent interest of ours, especially with Southern Africa’s ideal climate.  The projects herein are all completely “of-the-grid” with only borehole water connected.

A variety of concept work is produced during the lifetime of a design studio as ideas built on other ideas. These proposals may not be completed for various reasons, but the thinking behind them still has immense value for the development of design theory and hypotheses.

Showcasing proposals helps us document previous design and illustrates possibilities, to future clients and interested parties, even though the design was not physically realized.

AWAtelier explored the possibilities of interior & product design. This exploration was initially set up to stimulate design thinking in the office, but soon developed into a remarkably successful division of AWAtelier. Projects were completed under the watchful eye of the division head Jessice Crowther which lead to some beautiful installations. Jessice is currently furthering her studies abroad and we hope to collaborate with her design talent again in future.
